Robert Yamartino, Ph.D.
  Consulting Associate in Air Modeling

Dr. Yamartino is an internationally recognized expert on the development of specialized air quality models. During his more than thirty years of professional experience, he has developed and evaluated plume, puff, Lagrangian particle, and Eulerian grid models applicable to a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. He has made modeling contributions on such diverse topics as concentration fluctuations, simulation of individual realizations and ensembles, reactive plumes, surface depletion of plumes, urban ozone, acidic deposition, numerical advection, low wind speed dispersion, hybrid source receptor analyses, street canyon and garage ventilation, airport air quality, and turbulence statistics.

He is the principal developer of a number of models including: the synthetic-turbulence-based Kinematic-Simulation Particle (KSP) model, capable of predicting concentration fields for averaging-times as short as one second over spatial scales ranging from several meters to a thousand kilometers, the Canyon-Plume-Box (CPB) urban street canyon models, and the CALGRID photochemical model. He is also a co-developer of the EPA’s CALMET/CALPUFF mesoscale meteorological/dispersion modeling system, the Micro-CALGRID street-canyon-scale photochemical model, the EPA's Complex Terrain Dispersion Model (CTDM-PLUS), and the German RCG regional-/urban-scale photochemical model used within the EU’s ensemble modeling and model intercomparison programs (e.g., EuroDelta, CityDelta, TOR, GLOREAM). He has also contributed computational modules for the EPA’s Models-3 and CMAQ development programs, developed a refined horizontal transport and dispersion scheme for CARB’s SAQM, and consulted on numerous model development, application, and evaluation efforts.

Dr. Yamartino’s most recent technical efforts have been focused on adding non-linear chemistry and aerosol physics to the KSP model for SAIC. He also recently authored two chapters on the mathematics of Gaussian plume and puff modeling for Air Quality Modeling (Volume 3, 2008, P. Zannetti, Ed.). In addition to his technical accomplishments, he was a founder of Sigma Research Inc., has served as a corporate CEO and Treasurer, and currently manages the finances for several small corporations.
